About the market

A community market for Goa's local producers

A monthly producers-only gathering in Nuvem, created to make local food, handmade goods and producer stories visible, accessible and joyful. The market was launched on 15 March 2025 (World Consumer Rights Day) at Laban D'Souza's Organic Farm in Nuvem, and drew over 400 visitors to its first edition. Laban D'Souza is one of Goa's leading organic farmers and has been a steady supporter of the market from the start, hosting it on the land adjacent to his farm.

What is a community market?

It is a market where buying and selling are only part of the story. Visitors meet the people who produce what they consume. Children see food outside packets. Farmers and makers receive direct feedback. Local culture becomes visible through food, music, conversation and care.

For us, community also means inclusion: families, elders, young people, local residents, first-time vendors, experienced producers and curious visitors all have a place here.

Every month, alongside the stalls, we run small awareness and action campaigns on what 'farm to fork' really asks of us as consumers with rights and as eaters with responsibilities. Cleaner food costs more than money. We talk about what else it costs, and to whom.

Why producers only?

A producers-only market protects the trust between visitor and vendor. It means the stallholder is not an anonymous reseller. They are the grower, cook, baker, preserver, planter, artist or maker. Or directly accountable for what is on the table.

This creates transparency, better conversations and fairer visibility for small local producers who often disappear inside conventional retail systems.

A monthly market, yes, but also a longer project. We're rebuilding the community engagement that makes local food possible, and building something more grounded, more transparent and more resilient alongside it: an alternative food system for Goa.

Grassroots marketplace: 1 year of nurturing Goan vendors

In a one-year anniversary feature, Yogita Mehra of Green Essentials described the market's intent as more than just commerce: The idea is not only to sell stuff but also to be a source of education for people who want to do this kind of organic growing.
